Pool heat pumps in Spain: a buyer's guide (bomba de calor piscina)

Sizing

The right unit depends on pool volume, surface area, wind exposure, target temperature and whether you use a cover. An undersized pump runs constantly and never reaches temperature; an oversized one costs more than it needs to.

Inverter vs on/off units

Full-inverter models adjust their output rather than switching on and off, which makes them quieter and more efficient — important on a terrace where you want to relax.

Use a cover

Most heat is lost from the surface overnight. A cover dramatically cuts that loss and lets a smaller heat pump do the job.

Run it on solar

Pools are heated during the day, which lines up perfectly with solar production. Scheduling the heat pump around your generation keeps running costs close to zero and can extend your season from spring to autumn.

Solar pool heaters vs heat pumps

A 'solar pool heater' can mean two things. Solar thermal collectors (black mats or panels on the roof) pump pool water through them to warm it directly. They are simple and cheap to run, but only work while the sun is out, need a lot of roof space and give little control over temperature.

The other approach is a pool heat pump powered by solar panels. The panels also run the rest of your home when the pool doesn't need heat, and the heat pump holds a set temperature even on cloudy or cool days. For most villas in Jávea and the Marina Alta this is the more flexible option.

Heating a swimming pool with solar: what to expect

In our climate, a covered pool heated by a correctly sized heat pump running mainly on solar can be comfortable from around spring through to autumn. Without a cover, much more energy is needed and the season is shorter.

Other pool heating options — gas heaters and electric immersion heaters — heat quickly but are expensive to run over a whole season, which is why most owners here now choose a heat pump.
